Bhaderwah valley of Doda district today received another spell of snowfall: October 14
There was heavy rainfall, coupled with strong winds and hailstorm, in Bhadarwah valley in Kailash mountain range. The upper reaches of Bhadarwah had experienced season's first snowfall on October 5, resulting in early frost. The snowfall will hit paddy growers of the area, as the paddy crop is still in the fields and the hailstorm and strong winds will damage the standing paddy crop. The harvesting of China paddy would start in a couple of days but heavy rain and hailstorm has destroyed hope of good yield as there is hardly any grain left on the paddy shells as it is almost ripe.
"We produce high quality and famous Daggu rice and the entire Killar Valley is dependent on this crop. Paddy is still immature and will take at least another 10 days of dry and warm weather to start ripening but the early snowfall which has resulted in sudden drop in temperature will badly hit the quality of the rice," said a farmer and sarpanch of Duggli village in Killar belt of Bhaderwah.

Living with Leopards: October 27
India’s total leopard population is estimated to be in the range of 12,000 to 14,000 by WII  in areas including Western and Eastern Ghats, Central India and the Gangetic plains. However, it doesn’t include West Bengal, the eight north-east states and parts of Uttarakhand and human use areas. While the numbers remain ambiguous, the human-leopard interactions are fairly common in many areas. Is it really possible for leopards and humans to co-exist? Affirmative, say wildlife researchers in a recently released report based on conclusions of a 15-year research on leopards in India.
The Sanjay Gandhi NP with one of the highest densities of leopards in India, marred by a history of human-leopard interactions, recently proudly declared itself “conflict free” for almost a year. While wildlife news is being perceived and accepted in different ways by the common man, a few, who disseminate their knowledge with the public throughpopular articles in the local media, are actually making a very major contribution to conservation, states Praveen Bharghav, trustee, Wildlife First. Frequently engaging with all stakeholders including the media has paid off in a great way, affirms Vidya Athreya, a research associate with WCS-India. Nothing in science has any value to the society if it is not communicated and communicated accurately.
