Tigers thriving in Assam -  population in State increased to 167 in 2014 from 143 in 2010 and 70 in 2006: May 15
Bandipora- Kanzalwan - Dawar road opened to vehicular traffic today: May 15
Gurez is connected to Kashmir valley by a single road from Bandipore which runs across the Razdhan pass at an altitude of 11700 feet. Owing to heavy snow fall, large number of avalanches and snow slides in the area, this single artery remains cut off for many months during winter every year. The road and pass was declared open by GOC Chinar Corps. Last year this pass was opened to vehicular traffic on 20 May 2014 and was kept opened for an extended period up to January 14 nearly one month beyond the normal period.

Every year the wind power  generation starts around May 15, but due to the downpour in many districts, especially in Kanyakumari district and  in Coimbatore district in the state, wind in the mills in the catchment areas has been negligible and the generation is nil. Though Tamil Nadu has more than 7,000MW capacity to generate wind power, it is only between May 15 and September 15 the state gets this.

Ministry of Environment,  Forest and Climate Change has recommended grant of Environmental Clearance to the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Lower Dibang Valley without prior downstream impact study: May 20
Environmental experts have warned that foothill projects like 2880 MW Dibang, 2700 MW Lower Siang and 1750 MW Demwe Lower in Arunachal will face the first brunt of downstream impacts before Assam. 44 villages are likely to be affected due to acquisition of land.The project is proposed on the Dibang River near Munli village with a 278 m high concrete gravity dam, about 1.4 km upstream of confluence of Ashu Pani river with Dibang. The storage scheme project requires a total land of  about 5349.14 ha while the total submergence area is 3564 ha. An underground powerhouse is proposed on right bank of river with 12 units of 240 MW capacity each.

International Day of Biological Diversity: The Andhra Pradesh government has set up state, district, mandal and village-level biodiversity councils. There are  681 biodiversity councils out of 13,270 local bodies in Andhra Pradesh, out of which 669 belong to village-level and seven in mandal, one at the district level and four at city-level. Research activities in agriculture, biotechnology, ocean development, cooperation in agriculture, Indian medicine, homeopathy, science and technology and industrial development would be discussed in the councils for a healthy earth. The Biodiversity Act was enacted in 2002 to protect biodiversity.

Leopard beaten to death in Odisha: May 24
A  four-year-old leopard was beaten to death by locals when it strayed into Tikayatpur village under Dukura range of Baripada Forest Division from Kuldhia forest in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday. As the animal ran for shelter, people pelted stones at it, said Sanjay Kumar Swain, DFO, Baripada. Finally, the villagers used a net to capture the animal before clubbing it to death, he said. http://www.thestatesman.com/

Dalma WLS is bustling with elephant activities:
The elephants can be found at the watering holes at Majhla Bandh, Chotka Bandh, Bijli Ghati and Badka Bandh by 3pm every day and remain there well over two hours. There is a forest guest house in Pinderbera. More than 100 visitors visit Dalma daily.
Maximum temperatures in Odisha on May 25 (Monday): May 26

Titilagarh  46.5 degrees C; both Jharsuguda and Sambalpur sizzled at 46.4 degrees C;

At least nine stations reported 45 degree-plus temperature, four of which recorded above 46 degree Celsius. As many as 18 stations recorded 40 degree C and above on the day.
So far, more than 425 people have been hospitalised after being hit by sunstroke. Most of the sunstroke attack cases came in from Jajpur, Sundargarh, Sonepur and Balangir districts.

The loo, the super-hot winds blowing across most of north India is transporting this heat from Sindh, south Pakistan into this region.
Elephant census across Odisha: The three-day census  will start from Tuesday across 34 forest divisions. For the first time, the enumerators will take pictures of the jumbos so that a photo repository of the elephants can be created. The census, as usual, would be carried out through direct sighting methodology. Geo-reference of the elephant herds will also be used to keep a track of migrating groups so that repetition is avoided in adjoining habitats. Elephant census is conducted every four years across all the eight circles of Odisha. The last census was held in June 2012 and recorded 1,930 jumbos.

Central and Western Odisha continued to be in firm grip of the heat wave as the death toll goes up. Although mercury climbed-down in the coastal pockets of the State, there was little relief for the western belt where Sambalpur, Balangir, Bhawanipatna, Hirakud and Jharsuguda turned into cauldron of sorts.  Sambalpur was burning at 46.4 degree C and Titlagarh  47.6 degree C. Gale winds at 76kmph, accompanied by an hour of heavy rain lashes Ranchi and its outskirts .
Owing to excess heating of land and favourable wind pattern, clouds formed over Ranchi and resulted in heavy rain.The rain was the impact of a low-pressure trough spurred by a cyclonic circulation. The trough is stretched between sub-Himalayan Bengal and Jharkhand across Chhattisgarh and Odisha, said the Ranchi Met office. Jamshedpur witnessed a moderate storm and rain in the evening due to tall columns of cumulonimbus clouds. Ramgarh, Koderma and parts of Kolhan region were also soaked in surprise showers.

India’s severe heat wave — that has already killed well over 1,400 people, the weatherman said that the weekend is likely to bring relief from the wilting conditions that have prevailed across large parts of North India, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha over the past week. The mounting death toll due to heatstroke across the country could touch an all-time annual high as June has traditionally been the killer month for North India. The worst year in the recent past was 1995, when 1,677 people died of heat-related causes.

KNP now has 275 more swamp deer species. The last census undertaken by the park authority in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India and financial support from the ONGC during 1- 4 May, shows an increase of eastern swamp deer at 1,129, with some variations. The park now has 2,400 rhinos and is home to 328 adult male and 569 adult female eastern swamp deer. 
Union environment minister, Prakash Javadekar said last year 22 rhino poachers were killed in encounters and 47 arrested. Till 30 April this year, nine rhinos had been killed compared to 27 in 2014. An agency report from New Delhi adds that 11 rhino poachers have been killed in separate encounters, while 20 have been arrested in the Kaziranga National Park this year.
Elaborating on the measures taken to protect rhinos in Kaziranga, Javadekar said the park had been declared a tiger reserve and Central assistance was provided for intensive protection and conservation. a rhino protection force had been created and a 24x7 electronic surveillance system installed.

Parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh continued to reel under the heat wave: May 31
Heat Wave is not officially considered a Natural Calamity: May 31
Though heat wave deaths has crossed an unprecedented 2,000 mark, it is not officially declared a natural calamity. If  declared a natural calamity, a compensation of at least Rs 1.5 lakh would have to be given to the kin of the victims. The NDMA website, interestingly, flashes a new blinker, heat wave, on the list of natural calamities. A notification has to be issued to include heat wave in the category of natural disasters like earthquakes, droughts, cyclones and landslides and even cold wave. AP State has  announced Rs 1 lakh compensation to the kin of victims from the CM’s relief fund.
