Flash floods in
Kargil: Friday, May 8
A flash flood caused
by melting of snow hit Sankhoo village,
40 km from Kargil town today damaged and
inundated several buildings and crops. On Wednesday, water gushed down from a
nearby mountain towards the sleepy
village of Thang Humbree , 45 km from Kargil town and wrecked several houses
and buried their ground floors, trees and a stream of fresh water under rubble
and mud.
In Kargil, a remote
mountainous district in the Ladakh region, the lengthy winter is finally over.
The sudden sunshine
and rise in temperature have caused the snow, which is present in bulk on
surrounding mountains, to melt posing the threat of flash floods like the one
which swept through villages this week. The more severe flash flood, which had
been in the making for months, was triggered on Thursday morning in the
snow-bound Zanskar subdivision of Kargil where the rising temperature melted an
artificial frozen lake leading to evacuation of 4,000 residents from nearly 100
villages.

MAWLYNNONG : God’s
own garden - Asia’s cleanest village: May 9
Mawlynnong, in East
Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya is a tiny village with 95 households.
It is about 90
kilometres from crowded but picturesque Shillong. The speciality of this
village is that it is spotlessly clean, thus fetching the title of Asia’s
cleanest village. The villagers take it upon themselves to keep not only their
surrounding clean but the entire village as well. It is not unusual for people
of all age group to sweep the tiny concrete road that connects the village. The
villagers say that open defecation was stopped almost a decade ago under the
Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. The village has lush greenery all around, with abundance
of flowering orchids dangling in almost all the houses.
Even before the
village was dubbed the cleanest village, people have kept the village spotless.
Now, it’s a community responsibility. There is a parking lot here and visitors
will be guided to the designated area . Every vehicle has to pay fifty rupees to
the Dorbar Shnong, a local governance body for the maintenance of the
village. Between Sept-April, it receives up to 300 tourists a day!
The main occupation
of the villagers is agriculture mainly betel nut and horticulture produce. There are three
schools here and it is a 100 percent
literate village.Ten minutes' walk
from the village is a living roots bridge, unique to Meghalaya with a serene view of the tranquil rivulet
below. The nearby Sky walk made of bamboo and natural rope is more than 80 feet from where one can see
the plains of Bangladesh!

Arunachal tops in
illegal Poppy cultivation: May 10
Of the total 2,530
acres of illegal opium poppy crop destroyed across the country by Narcotics
Control Bureau (NCB) during 2014-15, Arunachal accounted for nearly 40 per cent
with 1,067 acres. During 2013-14, 1,222 acres and less than 400 acres in 2012 of
poppy were destroyed by NCB, in
Arunachal Pradesh. The figures could be just the tip of the iceberg as NCB
sources said they could not penetrate deep into the remote state as their teams
were attacked by armed locals. The teams
went to Arunachal after noticing
widespread poppy cultivation in satellite imagery provided by
Secundarabad-based Advanced Data Processing Research Institute (ADRIN).
The Institute of
Narcotic Studies and Analysis (INSA) in a ground-based extensive survey on
opium in 2010 found that poppy was being farmed on 16,441 hectares in just Lohit and Anjaw districts. According to NCB
officials, apart from Lohit and Anjaw districts, there have been reports of
poppy cultivation from Changlang, Longding, Upper Siang and Tirap districts.
Due to geographic
closeness with the 'Golden Triangle' of Myanmar, Lao PDR and Thailand, infamous
for opium and heroin production and trafficking, security agencies are
concerned that the state with favourable climate for poppy cultivation has
started to act as an extension of the international mafia indulging in the
illegal trade. There have been no indications that the extracted opium from the
poppy pods is refined into heroin in India. This means that it is being
smuggled to Myanmar, which is one of the largest heroin producers in the
region," an NCB official said. People in Arunachal extract opium in a
unique way by lancing poppy pods with blades and collecting the viscous fluid
on a fabric made of nettles. PTI/ <http://www.arunachaltimes.in/#Arunachal>
