the eyes of tribals," he said. Priced at Rs 300, the 244-page tome has 15
chapters. "I have tried to paint real life in the erstwhile Maoist
bastion," said Dungdung. "It is a paradox that West Singhbhum has the
highest per capita income in the state, but also figures on the list of 100
worst districts of the country in terms of human development indices,"
said development economist Ramesh Sharan.

Rogue elephant kills
three (From the archives - dated July 30, 1965): July 30
A nine-foot high
rogue elephant, which has already killed three persons, is now at large in
Bolampatti range areas near Siruvani, 20 miles from here [Coimbatore]. The
latest victim of the tusker is a 19-year-old cowherd who was chased to some
distance by the animal and crushed to death on July 16. Another victim of the
animal is a woman. While the official sources have confirmed the deaths of
three persons, villagers who have been watching the atrocities of the
mad-tusker for some months past claim that the animal had killed at least seven
persons and was still wandering about with unabated fury. According to some eye
witnesses, this animal a few months ago ran after a boy, who, while fleeing for
his life, dived into a small pond. But this cunning beast waited till the boy
came out of water and pulled him out and crushed him to death.
Steps are now being
taken to have this animal declared officially as a “rogue” by the District
collector so that any shikari who meets it can shoot it down dead.
